I don't mean to repeat the above comments, but I absolutely agree that giving students a choice is most effective. It's definitely important to appeal to the different interests of boys and girls. However, I also think that it is important to discuss with students that certain activities or interests are not exclusively a "boy thing" or "girl thing".
For example, for my publication activity, I decided to give students a choice to pick a community helper they would be interested in studying. Before starting the "community helper brochure" activity, we would discuss the different jobs. I would be conscious to point out that there are women police officers, fire fighters, etc. as well as men. After a thorough discussion, the students can choose which community helper to learn more about.
Overall, I think that there should be a good balance in appealing to different student interests in order to motivate students.
